A prior art search is an important initial step towards protecting your intellectual property (IP). Before talking about prior art searching, let's discuss "prior art" and "publications".
For our purposes, a "publication" is any patent, patent application, article, book, lecture, or other form of publicly-accessible description of an idea. "Prior art" is a publication that was made  public prior to a given date, such as the date when you came up with your idea.

It is frequently important to become familiar with the prior art specifically related to your idea. Becoming familiar with "what's out there" not only has IP ramifications, but it may also effect your future plans to commercialize and market your idea.
